ESPN journalist Jemele Hill delivered the commencement speech at her alma mater, Detroit Mumford High School, on Monday (June 11) and was honored the next morning with the school’s auditorium being renamed after her.
“I am overwhelmed which is kind of a crazy emotion for someone who has been in media as long as I have,” Hill told reporters during the dedication. “I’m so accustomed to not being the story, so to have an entire day that I guess is all about me, feels a little overwhelming, but also my heart is full because this school has given me so much.”

The Detroit native uploaded a video of herself laying a brick with her name in the school’s “M” of Fame and said it was one of her favorite moments during the dedication.
