ESPN Continues Innovative MLB Coverage with First-Ever Wild Card Baseball Tonight: Statcast AI Edition Alternative Viewing Experience
The dramatic battle for Wild Card teams to keep their season alive reaches its peak Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m. ET exclusively on ESPN with the American League Wild Card Game presented by Hankook Tire on ESPN and the ESPN App. Entering play on Sept. 25, the AL Wild Card race remains tight with the Cleveland Indians one and a half games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for the second wild card and the Oakland A’s holding a half-game lead over Tampa Bay for the first wild card position. ESPN will exclusively televise any tiebreaker games on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball team of Matt Vasgersian, analysts Alex Rodriguez and Jessica Mendoza and reporter Buster Olney will provide commentary for the win-or-go-home game. This will be Mendoza and Olney’s fifth and sixth time calling a Wild Card Game on ESPN, respectively.
Play-by-play voice Dan Shulman and Chris Singleton will provide commentary for the American League Wild Card Game on ESPN Radio. ESPN Radio will also provide coverage of the National League Wild Card Game Oct. 1 with Jon Sciambi and analyst Jim Bowden on the call at 8 p.m.
Statcast AI Alternative Viewing Experience
The fan-favorite alternative viewing experience Wild Card Game Statcast AI Edition powered by AWS returns to ESPN2 for the second year, with the play-by-play voice Jason Benetti, analyst Eduardo Perez and MLB Statcast analyst Mike Petriello delivering analytics-based commentary driven by innovative on-screen graphics, data and information provided by Statcast AI.
For the first time at the Wild Card Game, ESPN will broadcast an additional hour of Baseball Tonight on ESPN2. Benetti, Perez and Petriello will provide extended Statcast-based coverage preceding the Wild Card Game at 7 p.m. ET.
Loading the Bases
SportsCenter will be onsite at the National League Wild Card Game on Oct. 1. Kevin Connors will host alongside World Series Champions and analysts Ryan Howard and David Ross.
American League Wild Card pregame coverage will be available all day Oct. 2 on SportsCenter. Baseball Tonight coverage begins onsite starting at 5 p.m. on ESPN2. SportsCenter will continue coverage from 6-7 p.m. before Baseball Tonight presented by Chevrolet at 7 p.m. on ESPN, hosted by veteran Karl Ravech, World Series Champion Mark Teixeira and Tim Kurkjian.
Final Day of the Race
Sunday, Sept. 29, Baseball Tonight will be providing full coverage of the final day of the season beginning at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN, including live cut-ins to in-progress games, highlights and in-depth analysis of playoff races. Ravech will host alongside Teixeira, Kurkjian and Howard.
ESPN will also be the home of any tie-breaker coverage Monday and Tuesday, if necessary.
