On a night that recognized the best in sports media, ESPN led the way with 10 Sports Emmys presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for the 39th year.

ESPN’s commitment to journalism was recognized throughout the night, with a spotlight shinning on the production team and voices who bring viewers the stories from around the world. ESPN was also acknowledged for its innovation, technical expertise, and its highly-regarded commentators.

ESPN’s Journalism Recognized Once Again; Bob Ley Wins Emmy for Studio Host

E:60  was recognized for the ninth consecutive year, as the magazine program won its 13th and 14th Sports Emmy, capturing Outstanding Long Feature for Fight On, the inspirational story of blind long-snapper Jake Olson, and Outstanding Journalism for The Dictator’s Team, the story of a former Syrian national team player who traded a lucrative career as a soccer star for a life in a refugee camp.

SC Featured: A Mountain to Climb won for Short Sports Documentary, the story of Pratima Sherpa, who was raised in a maintenance shed behind the third hole of the Royal Nepal Golf Course. College GameDay Built by The Home Depot won Sports Emmys for Outstanding Short Feature for its story on Maryland’s Melvin Keihn who reflected on having to leave his mother in war-torn Liberia as a child, and reuniting with her 14 years later in his hometown.

Overall, tonight’s Sports Emmys recognitions are ESPN’s 25th and 26th in the features categories and 12th in the journalism categories. Individually, E:60 has 14 Sports Emmys and SC Featured has three. This was College GameDay’s first in the features category.

Bob Ley, longest-tenured host, won the Sports Emmy for Outstanding Studio Host for his remarkable work on Outside the Lines, E:60 and additional ESPN studio programming. He is ESPN’s first host to win the Sports Emmy in 20 years.

College GameDay Brings in Multiple Accolades: Wins Outstanding Studio Show Weekly for Fifth Consecutive Year, Recognized for its Features and Technical Expertise

College GameDay Built by The Home Depot continues its unparalleled success in the Outstanding Studio Show Weekly category, winning that Sports Emmy for the fifth consecutive year and its eighth time overall in the category. The show’s journalism was recognized, having won the aforementioned Emmy for Outstanding Short Feature.  Additionally, the operations technical expertise was acknowledged, capturing the Sports Emmys for Outstanding Tech Team Studio.  With tonight’s awards, the show has won 10 Emmys in the last 11 years.

Kirk Herbstreit Wins Third Sports Emmy, First for Outstanding Event Analyst
Lead college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit, who is also one of the faces of College GameDay, was awarded Outstanding Event Analyst, for his extraordinary work on ABC’s Saturday Night Football — the sport’s most-watched franchise — and the College Football Playoff on ESPN. The Sports Emmy was Herbstreit’s third, having been awarded Outstanding Studio Analyst twice for his work on College GameDay (2010, 11).  He is also been a vital part of the aforementioned College GameDay success.

Sunday Night Baseball Acknowledged for Its Innovation
ESPN’s innovation was recognized, as Sunday Night Baseball’s Front Row Cam won the Sports Emmy for Technical Achievement, ESPN’s 12th Emmy in that category.

ESPN Deportes Wins Outstanding Studio Show in Spanish
Futbol Picante on ESPN Deportes won the Sports Emmy for Outstanding Spanish Language Studio Show, the network’s fourth win in the category in five years.

ESPN Closing in on 200 All-Time Emmys
ESPN has now has won 196 Sports Emmy Awards in 31 years of eligibility
