Since 1945, EBONY magazine has been the pre-eminent voice of the Black community with relation to business, the arts and the Civil Rights Movement. Going into our 75th year, which begins in November 2019, the EBONY voice remains relevant and essential in our changing social climate, and we are pleased to announce the launch of the EBONY Foundation, the national nonprofit arm of EBONY Capital Partners, LLC.
The holidays are a time for family and gratitude. Too many people in the Black community will be spending the season in jail because they can’t afford the bail that would bring them home. The EBONY Foundation’s new initiative, HOME BY THE HOLIDAY, addresses the urgent need for bail reform and will be raising funds for bailouts in advance of the holiday season, with the goal of bailing out 1,000 people by Dec. 31, 2019, and 10,000 by Dec. 31, 2020.
Black
and brown people account for more than 50 percent of the pretrial population
nationwide and up to 90 percent in some jurisdictions. Pretrial detention,
fueled by unaffordable cash bail, accounts for nearly 100 percent of all jail
growth in America in the past 20 years.
The
EBONY Foundation will donate proceeds from HOME BY THE HOLIDAY to nonprofit
organizations with proven success, such as the American King Foundation, to
bring incarcerated people home so they can celebrate with their loved ones. Once a prisoner’s case
ends, either through exoneration or conviction, the bail money is returned and
can then be used for the next client who is in need. This means donated dollars
can be used multiple times, maximizing the impact of every contribution.
The
website HOMEBYTHEHOLIDAY.COM launches in October,
targeting the release of incarcerated men and women to be reunited with their
families for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year’s
Eve and continuing during holidays, including those celebrated by Muslims,
throughout the year ahead.
