Yayoi Kusama’s “Infinity Mirror Room” series is making its Boston-area debut this summer. From July 5 to October 28, Where the Lights in My Heart Go (2016) will be on view at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts.
On loan from the private collection of Lauren and Derek Goodman, the piece is a 10-by-10-foot stainless steel cube. The mirrored interior of Where the Lights in My Heart Go has small peepholes that allow outside light to stream into a dark chamber; the piece’s exterior is also reflective. The artist has called this work a “subtle planetarium” for its celestial, otherworldly effects.
“The temporary installation of Where the Lights in My Heart Go is a sensational opportunity for deCordova visitors of all ages to experience an enchanting work by one of today’s most beloved artists,” John B. Ravenal, deCordova’s executive director, said in a statement. “We are proud to exhibit Kusama’s sculpture outdoors where its mirrored surfaces will reflect and respond to the abundance of nature that surrounds us in the sculpture park.”
An exhibition copy of Where the Lights in My Heart Go was shown at Victoria Miro Gallery in London, in a 2016 solo exhibition titled “Yayoi Kusama: Sculptures, Paintings & Mirror Rooms,” and was later exhibited at Art Basel Miami Beach that year. The version of the work coming to the deCordova has never been exhibited publicly.
