The New School’s Vera List Center for Art and Politics has received a $5 million gift from the dealer Jane Lombard, who currently runs a space in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood. The funds will go toward the center’s $25,000 prize, which is given out biennially to a social justice–minded artist or group, and the award will now be renamed the Jane Lombard Prize for Art and Social Justice.
“I’m getting older, and the present political moment is so deplorable—not just here in the U.S., but around the world,” Lombard told ARTnews. “Anything anyone can do to make it a more equitable playing field is necessary. It’s a terrible situation, and it’s horribly necessary [to support projects like this].” She called the Vera List Center, which is based in Manhattan, “a solid platform on which artists can be identified and honored for speaking to the many social and political problems that exist today.”
Past winners of the center’s prize include Maria Thereza Alves and the collective Abounaddara. The 2018–20 winner of the prize will be announced on October 4 in New York at the center’s biennial forum, which is this year titled “If Art Is Politics.” Artist and curator Jolene Rickard is scheduled to give its keynote address.
Additionally, the center has announced its 2018–20 fellows: artist Dean Erdmann and curator, writer, and artist Helene Kazan. Erdmann plans to create a project with the New School community that will focus on “American illiberalism,” according to a release; it will touch on a variety of topics, from poverty in the U.S. to the thrill of motorcycling. Kazan’s research-based work addresses architecture in Lebanon and its connections to international law and people’s bodily experiences.
