David Zwirner gallery, which has locations in New York, London, and Hong Kong, has added Njideka Akunyili Crosby to its roster. The gallery said in a release today that Victoria Miro, of London and Venice, will also continue to represent the artist, who is based in Los Angeles.
Akunyili Crosby was one of the breakout talents of the 2015 New Museum Triennial. In 2011, she was an artist-in-residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem. In recent years, her paintings, which often feature black men and women whose bodies and environments are composed of dense groupings of transferred photographs, have appeared in museums around America and Europe.
“I do all of these mixes so that when you are in front of it you, the viewer, are being placed in this transcultural, trans-everything space,” Akunyili Crosby told ARTnews in 2015.
Later this year, solo exhibitions of Akunyili Crosby’s work will open at the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Modern Art Museum Fort Worth in Texas. In 2020, a show of her work curated by Hilton Als will open at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut. An outdoor mural by Akunyili Crosby is also currently on view at the Museum Contemporary Art, Los Angele’s Grand Avenue branch.
