As news of the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) continues to roil the world, with numerous museums in various countries announcing their closures, more art fairs have said that they will postpone their 2020 editions.
In Belgium, where there are around 400 confirmed cases of the virus, the Prime Minister closed schools, bars, and restaurants, and canceled all recreational events. Citing the “unprecedented situation” regarding the virus and “resulting force majeure,” Art Brussels’s organizers said they would postpone this year’s fair until June 26–28. The fair was originally scheduled for April 23–26.
Similarly, the organizers of the Brussels Gallery Weekend said they had canceled their gallery walks scheduled for Saturday, March 14. Their statement noted that many galleries in the city will be maintaining modified hours from Tuesday to Friday in keeping with the government’s new regulations affecting shops that are not grocery stores or pharmacies.
The organizers of the Affordable Art Fair, which has three editions scheduled for March, said that its Brussels (March 20–22) and New York (March 26–29) fairs had been postponed. The fair, which also holds a fall edition in New York, did not immediately have dates for when the fairs would be rescheduled. Its London edition is currently underway in the city’s Battersea Park and runs through March 15.
In Brazil, which now has around 50 confirmed cases of coronavirus and whose president had tested positive for the virus, the organizers of the SP-Arte fair, scheduled for April 1–5, said that, though they had tried to keep the fair to its original dates, they had ultimately decided to also postpone the fair, “until conditions are adequate for its realization.”
In a statement, the organizers said that because of the scale of the fair they had “no means yet to calculate the logistical and operational impacts, which are increasing every day with mobility restrictions and border closures.”
