Rebecca Matalon has been appointed curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston in Texas, where she will begin in her new position in January. She is currently assistant curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
At MOCA, Matalon has worked on exhibitions about Mickalene Thomas, Rick Owens, and Fischli/Weiss, as well as the three-person exhibition “Décor,” which featured work by Barbara Bloom, Andrea Fraser, and Louise Lawler. She also served as one of the curators of the MOCA edition of the Whitney Museum’s Zoe Leonard survey, which opened at the California museum earlier this week.
Prior to working at MOCA, Matalon founded JOAN, an alternative space in Los Angeles that has dedicated itself to exhibiting work by emerging, under-recognized, and female-identified artists.
In a statement, Matalon said, “To join an institution that has, for 70 years, championed the art of our time and played a vital role within the Houston community is a tremendous honor and privilege. I greatly look forward to working with such esteemed colleagues and becoming a part of the city’s diverse and well-established art scene, which is renown for its world-class institutions and strong community support for the arts.”
Late last month, CAMH’s director, Bill Arning, stepped down unexpectedly, and the museum’s deputy director, Christina Brungardt, is now serving as its interim director. “I am delighted to welcome Rebecca to CAMH,” Brungardt said in a statement to press. “Her passion and expertise will energize and complement the vibrant and diverse arts community of Houston in a similar manner as her projects in Los Angeles have done there. She is an asset to CAMH’s mission of creating exhibitions that contribute to and define the dialogue surrounding the cultural and social impact of contemporary art.”
