LOS ANGELES – JAN 13: D. L. Hughley at the NBCUniversal TCA Press Day Winter 2016 at the Langham Huntington Hotel on January 13, 2016 in Pasadena, CA.
D.L. Hughley took to Instagram on Friday to share his opinion on fellow comedian Kevin Hart stepping down as host of the 91st Academy Awards.
“So let me get this straight, a comedian tells a joke that offends people and refuses to apologize, and people want to know what I think of that,” Hughley, one of the original Kings of Comedy said.
He was referencing Hart’s refusal to say sorry for a slew of older tweets that used homophobic language at the request of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The posts in question were dig up by social media users after the announcement that the Night School star would be the master of ceremonies on Oscar night.
Hart, who previously apologized for offending the LGBTQ community, ultimately decided to step down from the position.
“I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscar’s,” Hart tweeted “This is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past.”
“F**k em, if they can’t take a joke. Well played Kevin Hart that is how it’s done,” D.L. Hughley concluded.
“People always go, ‘Why do comedians get away with it?’ Cause we’re not scared to get fired. You can say whatever you want to if you not scared to lose your gig.”
Hughley is no stranger to backlash for his jokes and comments. In 2016, he was blasted for making an offensive joke about the death of Debbie Reynold following the untimely passing of her daughter, Carrie Fisher.
He is a firm believer that comedians can say what they want and does so in his Netflix comedy special, Contrarian.
