A traveling Smithsonian exhibit of collage works based on Homer’s Odyssey by the celebrated African American artist Romare Bearden (1911-1988) will make its final stop at Columbia’s Wallach Gallery beginning in November. Curated by Robert O’Meally, Zora Neale Hurston Professor of English and Comparative Literature, the exhibition will be at the center of a unique yearlong, University-wide exploration of Bearden’s iconic A Black Odyssey. Departments and schools, students and faculty across Columbia, from the Core Curriculum to the Global Centers, will engage in an array of public programs, including lectures and conferences, jazz and spoken word performances, and other special events on and off campus beginning in September.
