The Cleveland Museum of Art has announced a $3 million gift from trustee William Madar and his wife Amanda. Their funds will be used to endow a new curatorial position, the William P. and Amanda C. Madar Curator of American Painting and Sculpture, with Mark Cole being the first to take on the role.
William Griswold, the museum’s director, said in a statement, “This very generous gift from Bill and Amanda Madar is the latest demonstration of their extraordinary commitment to the CMA.”
Cole has been with the CMA since 2006. He has helped organize a reinstallation of the American galleries at the museum, and he will now be in charge of overseeing a department whose holdings number nearly 300 American paintings and 90 sculptures created between 1750 and 1960.
