Photographer Cindy Sherman has won the Max Beckmann Prize, which is awarded every three years by the city of Frankfurt, Germany, and comes with €50,000 (about $56,670). The prize recognizes outstanding work in painting, graphic art, sculpture, and architecture.

Sherman has long been praised for performative self-portraits and photographs in which she enacts stereotypical and archetypical female roles. Her works are part of the collections at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Broad in Los Angeles, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among many other institutions.

Recent recipients of the Max Beckmann Prize—first given to painter Richard Oelze in 1978—include director Agnès Varda (2016), multimedia artist Otto Piene (2013), and photographer Barbara Klemm (2010).
