Twenty-two works by Richard Diebenkorn have been added to Christie’s upcoming Post-War and Contemporary sales in New York on May 17-18. One painting, Ocean Park #126 (1984), is estimated for to sell for $16-$20 million, which would break the record for an artist whose largest auction sale—of Ocean Park #48 from 1971—went for $13.5 million in 2012. The 22 paintings, to be on the block for the auction house’s day and evening sales, span Diebenkorn’s career, from 1949 (Sausolito, estimated at $500,000-$700,000) through the Ocean Park series painted between 1967 and 1984. The works are being sold to benefit the Donald and Barbara Zucker Family Foundation, started with funds from New York real-estate development.

In a statement, Christie’s director Sara Friedlander said, “For the past 30 years, the Zucker’s have lived with Richard Diebenkorn’s entire career in their living room. This exceptionally rare exploration of one artist in such depth represents a Diebenkorn retrospective and touches on virtually every moment of his life as he moved across America.”
