Chris Rock has a lot to say about the current state of comedy, believing that he can’t make “offensive” jokes anymore because of possible backlash.
Rock surprised the audience at the 2019 New York Film Critics Circle Awards on Monday where he poked fun at making jokes that toe the line, according to PEOPLE.
“If it was five years ago I could say something real offensive and funny right now,” he said. “but I can’t do that anymore, so…hey!”
The comedian’s comments come after Kevin Hart decided to step down from hosting the Academy Awards after people criticized him over anti-gay tweets that he wrote nearly a decade ago.
Rock, who hosted the Oscars in 2005 and 20016, said that he will never host the show again, suggesting that comedian Steve Martin, who’s hosted the show three times, take over.
“Steve Martin’s here! Steve Martin, you should host the Oscars,” said Rock. “You’re the best. Steve Martin should host the Oscars. Because I’m not doing it, goddammit! You’re not getting me.”
