The Bronx Museum of the Arts in New York has named art journalist, curator, and playwright Carey Lovelace as the third honoree for its 2019 benefit gala, which will be held in New York on April 8. Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman, cofounders of the public art initiative For Freedoms, and Junko Kobayashi, president of the Stan Lee Foundation, will also be honored at the event.
In 2008, Lovelace curated the Bronx Museum show “Making It Together: Women’s Collaborative Art and Community,” which focused on feminist visual art and performance collectives of the 1970s. With the late Holly Block, who served as executive director of the Bronx Museum from 2006 to 2017, Lovelace also acted as co-commissioner of Sarah Sze’s U.S. Pavilion at the 2013 Venice Biennale.
Lovelace has written for the New York Times, Artforum, ARTnews, and Art in America, among other publications. Her plays have been staged at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Alleyway Theatre in Buffalo, New York, and elsewhere, and she is a cofounder of the Los Angeles Symposium of Women Composers and the Independent Composers Association. She is executive managing director of Loose Change Productions, an organization that works to produce cross-cultural performances.
Deborah Cullen, the executive director of the Bronx Museum, said in a statement, “Carey Lovelace has been a vital influence to the Bronx Museum over the years, and we are thrilled to be honoring her alongside For Freedoms and the Stan Lee Foundation. Each of our honorees shares the Bronx Museum’s commitment to championing underrepresented voices in the art world and building community engagement and collaboration.”
