A former executive for Marriott Vacations says that he was asked to dance during meetings for his colleagues and that a photo of Little Rascals character Buckwheat was used to represent him during a team exercise, NBC News reports.
Daryl Robinson, a Black man, is suing Marriott Vacations Worldwide for unlawful race discrimination and harassment failed to prevent those practices and retaliation for opposing forbidden practices, per reports.
He said that he was only African-American in the office when he joined the company as a sales executive in February 2017.
Robinson said in the lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday asked him to dance to music by Michael Jackson and made comments on the team, even saying “Daryl looks ready to breakdance.”
He claims that other employees laughed at the comment, which left him “completely humiliated, dejected and felt completely defeated.”
“Admittedly, one time, he did get up and dance,” Robinson’s attorney, John Dalton, told NBC News. “There were a number of times he was asked and he was like, ‘No, no thanks.’ And when he did get up, he was the new guy. He didn’t want to make waves.”
In the suit, Robinson claims that during a team building exercise he did not submit a baby photo of himself because as the only Black person in the office everyone would know who he was. He said that a co-worker placed a picture of Buckwheat from Little Rascals and asked: “Who do you guys think this is?”
Ed Kinney, the spokesman for Mariott Vacations Worldwide, told NBC that the company is aware of the lawsuit, but cannot comment.
Robinson’s attorney told NBC that his client was placed on medical leave by his doctor. He left the company on Jan. 1, 2018.
