TRENDING: AI Tools That Can Help You Make Money In 2026
There are plenty of everyday bills and expenses you can reduce, pause, or eliminate to give your budget some breathing room.
Here are some realistic costs you can cut back on when money gets tight:
Subscriptions
A lot of times, we have more subscriptions than we need or even use, and more often than not, some of the subscriptions we have offer the same things, so we end up paying double for the same product. Check your subscriptions.
Food delivery services
Delivery services such as DoorDash, Uber Eats, Postmates, etc., are a luxury that may not be so affordable in today’s economy; alternative options such as driving to get your food or even cooking at home can make a difference in your savings and spending.
Shopping
Weather it be in person or online, shopping is defintly something you can cut out of your budget the money is tight.
Eating Out
Eating out at high-end restaurants or even casual restaurants can add up a lot faster than you would expect, especially if you do it on a consistent basis. This is definitely something you can cut back on if money is tight.
Gas
You’re probably questioning how you can save on gas , especially with the prices being so high all over the country, and honestly, the answer is not sexy, however its deintly an option if money is tight… public transportation is typically avalive in most places and could be a great way to save some money on these high gas prices.
Starbucks & Coffee
Most people start their day off with a fresh cup of coffee; however, the majority of those coffee lovers are not enjoying their coffee at home, they are, on average, spending $7-$10 on a cup per day, which definitely adds up.
Storage Unit
For alot of us, when we put something in a storage unit we forget it exist, yes the monthoy fee still gets paid every month though fees could be as low as $20-$30 a month or $100 or higher, those fees really add up after a while especially if the unit is fully of things you dont even remember exist. Check your storage unit if theres nothing you need or want, you should probably sell the stuff and cancle the unit. this will not only save you money, but you could make a few buck here as well.
Beauty Appointments
Don’t look at us sideways, ladies; monthly or weekly maintenance is absolutely understood. Getting your toes, nails, eyebrows, lashes, facials, massages, hair etc. done every week or every two weeks can cost you collectively over $1000. Instead of paying a house note on maintenance, see if some of your maintenance can be done at home or if there is something you can teach yourself how to do.
Rideshare
With rideshare apps like Uber, Lyft, etc., we may think we are saving in the transportation area due to the cost of gas being high; however, oftentimes we are not. If you are able to cut back on rideshare, you could see some solid savings here.
Lawn care
Paying for lawn care services every week or month can add up quickly, especially during the warmer months. If you have the time and equipment to mow your own lawn, consider cutting back on professional services or handling some of the maintenance yourself.
Financing
With Buy Now, Pay Later services and financing options, it can be tempting to break up the cost of smaller purchases into monthly payments. However, financing items under $500 can lead to a pileup of recurring payments that eats into your budget. Before financing a purchase, consider saving up and paying for it upfront when possible.
Paid pet grooming
Regular trips to the groomer can become an expensive recurring expense, especially if your pet requires frequent baths, haircuts, or nail trims. If your pet’s grooming needs allow for it, consider handling basic maintenance at home or spacing out professional appointments.
Sports tickets
You don’t have to see your favorite sports team play every week, especially when tickets to some games can cost more than $300. If you’re a die-hard fan who attends games regularly, purchasing season tickets may be worth comparing, as the per-game cost could be lower than buying individual tickets. Otherwise, consider attending fewer games, watching from home, or looking for discounted tickets to save money.
Car washes
If you’re paying for a car wash every week or signing up for a monthly wash membership, that expense can quietly add up. When your budget gets tight, consider washing your car at home or cutting back on how often you visit the car wash if you do not have a membership.
Electricity
Your electricity bill can be one of the easiest household expenses to bring down when money gets tight. Simple changes like raising the thermostat a few degrees in the summer, turning off lights, unplugging electronics you aren’t using, and running appliances during off-peak hours when available can help lower your monthly bill. Even small changes in your daily energy use can add up over time.
Buying Apps
It can be easy to spend money on apps, especially when small purchases or in-app upgrades are only a few dollars at a time. But those $2, $5, and $10 purchases can quickly add up, especially with games, editing apps, dating apps, and other subscriptions. When your budget gets tight, consider sticking with free versions and avoiding unnecessary in-app purchases.
Alcohol with meals/ The bar
Going out for drinks with friends can be a fun way to unwind, but bar tabs can quickly become one of those expenses that gets overlooked when you’re trying to save. Drinks at restaurants and bars can cost significantly more than what you’d pay elsewhere, and a few nights out each month can add up.
