What does being one of the BEMM 100 Men of Distinction mean to you?
It is the fulfillment of a dream as I have long been an admirer and beneficiary of BE.
What are some examples of how you turned struggle into success?
As a boy, I stole books on filmmaking from a store in Chicago. When I won my first Emmy I went back to offer money to the store owner for what I had taken and returned for years. He laughed and said I was a terrible thief!
What is an important quality you look for in your relationships with others?
A sense of epic scale. You can’t do epic work with basic people.
What are some immediate projects you are working on?
Developing programs for Lifetime and BET.
What is the best advice you ever received?
From my mother, “Trust God.”
What is some advice you have for other men who want to make a difference?
Remember the words of the great Marvin Gaye; “There’s only three things fo’ sho; taxes, death and trouble!” If you can stay prepared for that trio you’ve got it covered.
How do you prep for an important business meeting and/or event?
Listen to “The Theme from Shaft”, “Are You Man Enough” by the Four Tops and “Trouble Man” by Marvin Gaye.
As a busy Modern Man, how do you unwind on vacation? Share a story about your best vacation.
It was in San Diego. I let the gentle breezes and blue ocean float my thoughts and cares away.
If you could travel and stay anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Bora Bora because it’s Bora Bora!
What is your “Extraordinary Impact”?
I have been mentoring for over 30 years. It’s my ministry. I’ve seen the dreams of dozens of brothers and sisters come true just because someone they held in high esteem told them that anything is possible.
Anything else you’d like to say?
To God be the Glory for the things He has done!
