A Baltimore Attorney has been arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs into a jail for his incarcerated client at the Roxbury Correctional Institution in Hagerstown.
Steven Thurman Mitchell, 55, of the 4000 block of Grindon Ave, was arrested June 28, and has been charged with four misdemeanor charges including “possession and the delivery of a controlled substance to a place of confinement” according to online court records.
Mitchell was released on his own recognizance the same day of his arrest.
A news release, emailed by the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, said that Mitchell brought two binders to his client, Mandel Brown, during an afternoon visit.
It is not known what Mitchell is representing Brown for.
However, according to the release, Mitchell was stopped by a corrections officer after he tried to leave the visit without the binders.
The binders were taken from Brown and a subsequent search allegedly revealed the binders contained 125 strips of Suboxone.
Suboxone is a drug used to treat opioid addiction. The strips are put under the tongue to dissolve.
Mitchell’s trial date is set for August 21 at the Washington County District Court in Hagerstown.
“I have an attorney and look forward to my day in court,” Mitchell said according to a report by the Baltimore Sun.
