The artist David Hockney wants us to draw something—so pick up a pencil (or iPad) and get sketching. This call to create art marks the start of the nationwide Draw! initiative launched by Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture.
January kicks off with the first theme chosen by Hockney, who is encouraging people to draw “something you find beautiful”, from everyday scenes to daily detritus. “The world is very very beautiful if you look at it, but most people don't look very much. Looking at the world is good for you,” says Hockney. By way of an example, the artist highlights his quirky 1989 cover design for the Bradford District telephone directory which shows a deep valley, terraced houses and a little blue bus. The public can share their drawings by uploading them until 31 January, when a new theme for February will be announced.
Local boy Hockney meanwhile is a cornerstone of the Bradford celebrations this year. David Hockney: Pieced Together is on view at the newly renovated National Science and Media Museum (15 January-18 May), which explores the artist’s technological innovations such as his 1980s “joiner” photocollages.
