Artprize, the organization based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that also runs an art competition, has revealed the artists participating in the inaugural edition of its Project biennial, which will take place in the Midwestern city from September 7 to October 27. The first edition of the biennial, Project 1, will feature newly commissioned large-scale public works by Amanda Browder, Heather Hart, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Olalekan Jeyifous, and the duo Paul Amenta and Ted Lott.

ArtPrize was founded in 2009 as an annual art competition. In 2018, the organization revealed that it would adopt a biennial format, with editions of Project alternating with competitions.

Artworks in the first Project biennial, which is titled “Crossed Lines,” will explore the ways in which boundaries and distinctions between private and public spaces impact our experiences of urban environments. Installations will be on view throughout the city, with some occupying multiple sites. A few pieces in the show will function as stages for performances, and others will engage viewers more directly.

Kevin Buist, the artistic director of ArtPrize and Project 1, said in a statement, “In taking up the notion of ‘crossed lines,’ the exhibition seeks to explore borders and intersections of many types—aesthetic, political, social—that result in the harmonies, tensions, and unexpected outcomes that make a city what it is. When people, places and points of view cross one another there is friction, a beginning point for both conflict and creative spark.”

In selecting the artists for Project 1, Buist worked with a curatorial advisory committee that included Joseph Becherer, director of the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame; independent curator Dan Cameron; independent curator and writer Nicole Caruth; Alice Gray Stites, the chief curator of 21c Museum Hotels; Larry Ossei-Mensah, the senior curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit; and Rebecca Carbin, an independent curator and the founder of I Heart Your Work Art Futures and ART + PUBLIC UnLtd.
