What does home mean to you? The newest art exhibition, Come Home with Me, at the Baltimore Museum of Art explores what that means for Baltimore artist and native, Jerrell Gibbs. Curated by Antoinette Roberts, BMA Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art. This solo exhibition comprises 32 new paintings created this year, inspired by the people, places, and experiences that have defined Gibbs’s life in Baltimore, Maryland.
This exhibition powerfully showcases legacy, the importance of archiving, Black families, and the beauty of everyday life in Baltimore, Maryland.

His memories and collections from his upbringing all took place at his Aunt Ella’s house, where he was raised. All works featured in this exhibition came from photographs found in a photo album in his aunt’s basement, a strong reminder to archive everything, as you never know when someone from your family needs it.
This exhibition is divided into sections like a home: porch, living room, kitchen, backyard, and basement. Among the paintings, you will see family photographs toward the end of the exhibition, offering the viewer a glimpse into his beautiful family.
Gibbs expressed his fondness for Velázquez, among a few other European masters, and examined how to produce new interpretations of their works for the 21st century. As you walk through the basement section of the exhibition, you will see The Alize Drinker, which is inspired by Édouard Manet’s The Absinthe Drinker. I always enjoy viewing an artists’ interpretations of classics translated to modern life.
In the final section of the exhibition, a blown-up map of spots Gibbs and his family frequented in Baltimore, MD, when he was growing up is still on display. I loved that this exhibition is not only showcasing his world but also the beautiful city of Baltimore. If you pick up a pamphlet, you can see the businesses listed and go check them out.
The exhibition is open until May 2, 2027. Enjoy this video below where he discusses a few works included in the exhibition.
