Artadia, the Brooklyn-based nonprofit that works to support artists, has named Francis Almendarez, Rabea Ballin, Natasha Bowdoin, Dana Frankfort, and Angel Oloshove as finalists for its 2018 Houston awards.
Jurors for this year’s awards—sculptor Huma Bhabha, Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston curator Dean Daderko, and Art in Embassies curator Claire D’Alba—will visit the finalists’ studios and award two artists with $10,000 in unrestricted funds. Submissions for the award were open to visual artists who have lived in Houston for at least two years, regardless of medium.
“The Artadia Houston submissions were incredibly diverse,” D’Alba said in a statement. “The range of artists’ backgrounds and cultural identities was notable, but the variety of media and practice was also striking. It was a pleasure to spend time considering the work of so many hard-working artists, and I’m inspired by how much vibrant and compelling art is being made in Houston.”
This is Artadia’s ninth edition of its Houston Awards. Since 1999, the organization has awarded more than $3 million in grants to over 310 artists working in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco.
