Benning Road, in both the Southeast and Northeast quadrants of D.C., has met major violence since Sept. 22 and on Oct. 6 another life was lost.
At about 8:45 p.m. police responded to the sound of several gunshots and found Avery Anderson, 21, of Southeast, suffering from wounds, from which he died, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
Prior to Anderson’s death, two people were killed on Sept. 24 and Sept. 30. Additionally, six people were shot and wounded since the string of violence began on Sept. 22. The first death was on the 1800 block of Benning Road and the second was on the 1500 block. About two weeks ago, also on the 1800 block of Benning Road, four people were shot, and two others were shot on Sept. 25 around the 2300 block.
Despite the coincidence of being on Benning Road, The Washington Post reported that Saturday’s homicide was comparatively far from the other gun related violence in the area- most of which occurred on the part of the road west of the Anacostia River and in Northeast D.C. in the Carver/Langston and Kingman Park neighborhoods.
The most recent homicide was about two miles away from the other incidents, about a quarter mile south of the Benning Road metro station.
Police are offering up to $25,000 for any information leading to the “arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible” for the homicide of 21-year-old Anderson. Those with information are encouraged to call the police at 202-727-9099 or to anonymously text the tip line at 50411.
