The Brant Foundation’s inaugural exhibition in its New York outpost, a survey of paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat, is not yet officially open, but free tickets for the show have already sold out.
The by-appointment-only facility has received 50,000 online bookings for the show, which opens March 6 and runs through May 15, according to a rep for the foundation.
Those who missed the chance to book can ask to be added to a rapidly expanding waitlist. (The rep did now know the length of that list.)
Around 1,100 people are allowed in daily to the foundation’s 16,000-square-foot building in the East Village, which was once a Con-Ed building and later became the home and studio of artist Walter De Maria.
For those who miss out on the show, there is some good news: in June, the Guggenheim in New York will open a thematic exhibition about Basquiat.
