Alexander Gray Associates now represents Cuban artist Ricardo Brey, who works in drawing, sculpture, and installation, and who is best known for his inventive assemblages of historical and everyday objects. The artist’s first solo show in New York is slated to take place at the gallery in 2019.

Born in Havana, Brey has lived and worked in Ghent, Belgium, since 1990. His work first garnered critical attention at the 1981 group show “Volumen I” at the Centro de Arte Internacional in Havana, and, in 1992, he became the first Cuban artist to participate in Documenta. During these years, Brey explored colonialism in Latin America and Afro-Cuban traditions in his practice. His more recent works—like Universe (2002–06), Annex (2003–16), and Every life is a fire (an ongoing project)—focus on mythologies, the origins of humanity, and the subjective nature of reality.

Over the course of his career, Brey has maintained personal relationships with several artists on the gallery’s roster, including Luis Camnitzer, Melvin Edwards, and Coco Fusco.

“Consistent with the gallery’s program, his work really balances formal experimentation and innovation with concerns that are social and political,” Alexander Gray, the gallery’s founder, told ARTnews.

Gray emphasized the novelty of Brey’s artistic output, which often involves an intricate layering of materials, objects, and images. “Stylistically, his work looks very different from anything as far I’m concerned,” he said. “There’s a jewel-like quality to his making that is really singular for his practice.”
