WASHINGTON, DC – Kofi Tyus Studios has launched a new website and collection featuring greeting cards, original artwork and limited edition prints honoring Black culture. The cards are for ever occasion including Christmas and Kwanzaa, Valentine’s, Mothers and Fathers’ Days and Growing together and U-Turn Cards, all highlighting beautiful artwork and images to inspire Black families. The “U-Turn” Cards are a unique line designed to inspire inmates and returning citizens.
Tyus established his studio after graduating from Howard University in 1968, and is renowned for his ability to unite communities through creating uplifting and inspirational artwork. His artwork has been featured on over 300 greeting cards, which have become vital tools in enhancing communication and projecting positive images and expressing messages of substance.
In the past 50 years, Tyus has illustrated more than 1,000 pieces of original artwork and illustrations portraying beautiful, vibrant and positive images of the Black and African communities, and has received international acclaim. His artistic mediums specialize in Mosaic Tile, Acrylic Paintings, Watercolor Paintings and Etchings inspired by several trips to Africa. In 1972 he was commissioned by the Government of the Republic of Kenya to create a painting, entitled “In the Shadow of Mount Kenya,” which is currently on display in the Kenyan Embassy in Washington, D.C. In 2017, Kofi Tyus was commissioned by the DC Department of General Services (DHS) to paint a series of ten (10) original water-color murals portraying the cultural diversity of the Adams Morgan community.
