A Look at Exhibitions Around Basel -ARTnews

On Thursday evening, I was talking to a dealer at Art Basel who, despite being on his third day of sitting in his booth, was feeling positively buoyant about the whole experience. Interesting people had been coming through, there was great art on offer at the fair, and beyond the Messeplatz, there was even more to see at museums and galleries. Basel during art fair week is a paradise of ambitious exhibitions.

At the Kunstmuseum, there is a stunning survey of paintings from 1967 to 1973 by the great Sam Gilliam that is nothing short of masterful—pretty much every work is a stunner. Now curators in the United States need to put together a full-on Gilliam retrospective and send it on a wide tour of the country. But that is not all at the Kunstmuseum’s locations. They also offer shows of work by Maria Lassnig, Theaster Gates, and a two woman show of Hito Steyerl and Martha Rosler.

Heading elsewhere, there’s an intense Raphaela Vogel outing at the Kunsthalle, and over at the Kunsthaus Baselland there’s Rochelle Feinstein. The Beyeler Foundation has a Giacometti-Bacon show.

But many of you readers are not in Basel at the moment. And so, to prove my point, and to provide you with a visual feast, here are some photos of notable exhibitions on view around town.

It’s a project done in cooperation with the Basler Papiermühle.

: Ferdinand Hodler’s Stockhorn Range with Lake Thun in Winter (1913), a work from a private collection in “Beyeler Collection: Nature + Abstraction,” which is filled with delights by Brice Marden, Piet Mondrian, and more. The Beyeler also a blockbuster Bacon–Giacometti show on view.

: A great painting on the side of a truck of a produce seller at Claraplatz, a short tram ride from Basel.

: Lara Almarcegui is having gravel brought from a local quarry to the Messeplatz during the run of Basel as part of a Creative Time-commissioned project called Basilea, which is organized by Isabel Lewis, Santiago Cirugeda’s architecture firm Recetas Urbanas, and Almarcegui.

: A video work screening on the outside of the Schaulager, home for now to his current retrospective, “Bruce Nauman: Disappearing Acts,” which will come to the Museum of Modern Art in New York in October.
