Van Doren Waxter in New York has added sculptor Daisy Youngblood to its roster. The gallery will present work by the artist at Art Basel Miami Beach in December.
Youngblood’s sculptures of animal and human bodies, rendered in clay, bronze, wood, and stone, appear decayed and ancient, as if uncovered during an archaeological dig. A recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship in 2003, Youngblood lives and works in Costa Rica, where she collects natural materials for her artworks.
Youngblood’s work has been exhibited at MoMA PS1, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the New Museum in New York, among other venues. Her pieces are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, and the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh.
Dorsey Waxter, a partner at the gallery, said in a statement to ARTnews, “I have personally been aware of the artist’s striking body of work for many years. We look forward to presentations and exhibitions that reveal the beauty and sensitivity of her animal and human forms made by the hand.”
