The Herb Alpert Foundation and California Institute of the Arts has named the five winners of its 2019 Herb Alpert Award in the Arts, which comes with a $75,000 purse and is given to mid-career artists. This year’s visual arts award was given to artist, poet, and activist Cecilia Vicuña.

“Artists are truth-seekers—they need to be able to express their truth,” Herb Alpert, the foundation’s namesake, told ARTnews. “The prize is for mid-career artists because I want them to be able to say what they need.”

The award is split into five categories—dance, film/video, music, theatre, and visual arts. Each winner was selected by a panel specific to that category. Vicuña was selected by former Contemporary Art Museum Houston director Bill Arning, Whitney Museum curator Marcela Guerrero, and LAXART executive director Hamza Walker.

The list of 2019 recipients follows below.

Dance: Pam Tanowitz
Film/Video: Beatriz Santiago Muñoz
Music: Meshell Ndegeocello
Theatre: Lloyd Suh
Visual Arts: Cecilia Vicuña
