In recent years, many mega-galleries have been building serious publishing operations, increasing the number of books they release annually, putting out luxurious magazines, and partnering with big-league houses. Now Hauser & Wirth is planning to grow its already robust publishing business.

In June, Hauser & Wirth Publishers, which the gallery founded in 1992, will expand  by opening a new global headquarters in Zurich. (The gallery currently has one space in the city, as well as two others in Switzerland, in Gstaad and St. Moritz. Hauser & Wirth also operates galleries in New York, Los Angeles, London, Hong Kong, and Somerset, England.) To complement the opening of the headquarters, Hauser & Wirth will also inaugurate a new bookstore in the city.

“Zurich is a great place for our publishing,” Michaela Unterdörfer, the director of publications at Hauser & Wirth, told ARTnews. “I noticed that the artists and the estates that we work with were happy to come here, to work with us. It’s a great hub.”

The publishing company’s headquarters and bookstore will be located at Rämistrasse 5, an address that has at various points been the home of the bookshop Oprecht & Helbling and the publisher Europa Verlag, which put out key tomes related to critical theory, philosophy, and design throughout the 20th century.

Hauser & Wirth Publishers’ newest headquarters and bookstore will be designed by the Swiss firm Dioma and will officially open on June 8, during Zurich Art Weekend, right before the opening of Art Basel.

For Unterdörfer, Hauser & Wirth’s publishing efforts are about more than moving artwork. “It’s no longer a tool connected to an exhibition meant to sell work,” she said. “It’s to develop something with a long-lasting, meaningful, significant impact for an artist’s bibliography. We’re very privileged to work like that.”
