Zimbabwean artist Gareth Nyandoro has joined the roster of Van Doren Waxter gallery in New York. Nyandoro had his first solo show with the gallery last year, and his next exhibition with Van Doren Waxter is slated to take place during the enterprise’s 2020 season.
The artist is best known for his large-scale works on paper, which often depict scenes of daily life in Harare and other cities. He is also represented by Tiwani Contemporary (London) and smac (Capetown and Johannesburg).
“What attracted me to Gareth’s practice is how visually generous and complex the work is, in terms of technique, as well as the humble subject matter,”Augusto Arbizo, a partner at Van Doren Waxter, told ARTnews of the gallery’s decision to show Nyandoro’s work. “The images are daily observations of interactions between people, which are, to me, very poetic. His process is a hybrid of drawing, printmaking, painting, and even installation, and he keeps it all very open-ended.”
Nyandoro’s artworks have been shown at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Stichting Beeldende Kunst in Amsterdam, and the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, among other venues. His work is part of the ongoing exhibition “Five Bhobh – Painting at the End of an Era” at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art in Cape Town, and his piece Mukanya Repairs was recently acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The artist also co-represented Zimbabwe at the 2015 Venice Biennale.
