Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, of the proto-industrial music group Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV as well as a visual artist working in many different mediums, has reportedly fallen deeper into ill health while suffering from leukemia. According to an e-flux missive and expanded online communiqué written by Jason Louv, the author of several books and the editor Breyer P-Orridge’s textual compendium Thee Psychick Bible, “A few days ago, she was admitted to the hospital, as she was unable to breathe without oxygen. Genesis’s lungs have become blocked with fluid, which her doctors had previously attempted to remove with a suction needle. This failed, as the fluid has become too viscous and thick. Genesis now needs to undergo full surgery to clean out her lungs—a serious and potentially life-threatening procedure.”
Louv asks supporters to donate to a GoFundMe campaign set up to help Breyer P-Orridge with medical costs. As for further updates, Louv wrote, “I am in regular contact with her but the family have asked me to keep privacy until Gen decides to make a statement.”
Breyer P-Orridge’s work with Throbbing Gristle, dating back to England in the 1970s, helped set the stage for countless outgrowths of extreme performance- and music-related activities in the decades since. As a visual artist, Breyer P-Orridge has shown in galleries including Invisible-Exports and, in 2016, was the subject of “Genesis Breyer P-Orridge: Try to Altar Everything,” a survey show of paintings, sculptures, and installations inspired by Hindu mythology and culture in Nepal at New York’s Rubin Museum of Art.
