On Saturday evening in Berlin, the Preis der Nationalgalerie, an award given out every other year to an artist working in Germany, revealed its 2019 nominees. The artists up for consideration this year are Pauline Curnier Jardin, Simon Fujiwara, Flaka Haliti, and Kajta Novitskova. The winner of this year’s award will be announced in September.
The Preis der Nationalgalerie is one of Germany’s most prestigious art awards. It comes with a solo show at the Nationalgalerie in Berlin, though it includes no cash prize—a fact that been criticized by some of its previous nominees.
The jury that chose this year’s nominees was made up of Nikola Dietrich, the director of the Kölnischer Kunstverein; writer and filmmaker Doris Dörrie; Marina Fokidis, who oversaw Documenta 14’s South as a State of Mind journal; actor Ulrich Matthes; and Bige Örer, the director of the Istanbul Biennial.
Past winners of the award have included Agnieszka Polska (2017), Anne Imhof (2015), and Omer Fast (2009).
