Almine Rech Gallery, which has galleries in Paris, London, Brussels, and New York, now represents the estate of the Spanish artist Antoni Tàpies, who died in 2012 at the age of 88. Rech’s first show of his work will be at its Brussels space in March of 2020.
Tàpies’s estate will also continue to be represented by the Pace Gallery, Galerie Lelong & Co, and Timothy Taylor.
The artist is best known for brushy, rough-and-tumble abstract paintings made with a wide variety of mediums and sometimes incorporating trace elements of figuration—hints of body parts or quotidian objects.
Tàpies had retrospectives at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1962 and 1995, as well as the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 1975. In addition to appearing in three Venice Biennales, in 1993 he represented Spain at the big show, and took home the Golden Lion.
With his estate joining Rech, Tàpies will be in the company of the estate of Tom Wesselmann, Julian Schnabel, Joe Bradley, Jeff Koons, and a number of other blue-chippers.
