Across the country on Thursday, particularly in the Midwest, temperatures continued to sit near record lows for the second day in a row, and many art museums in the region shuttered due to the unprecedented conditions.
All the major Chicago museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago remained closed, though the MCA did manage to provide some art programming through its Twitter account, posting a new podcast interview with Laurie Simmons, who will have an exhibition titled “Laurie Simmons: Big Camera/Little Camera” at the museum next month.
Beyond the Windy City, museums around the Midwest also closed their doors, such as Madison, Wisconsin’s Museum of Contemporary Art, the Detroit Institute of the Arts, Detroit’s Museum of Contemporary Arts, and the Minneapolis Museum of Art.
However, another Minneapolis institution, the Walker Art Center, was open. In the late afternoon, the temperature there was 5 degrees below zero, but an attendant at the center’s box office reached by phone said, “We’ve actually seen quite a few people today!” The museum is free on Thursdays evenings, he continued, “so we just decided to stay open.”
