Murals, light projections, an outdoor movie theater, and more are coming to the Coachella Valley, the Salton Sea, and Mexico next month courtesy of Desert X, the biennial-style show that places temporary, site-specific works within the landscape near the U.S.-Mexico border. Curated by artistic director Neville Wakefield, along with Amanda Hunt and Matthew Schum, Desert X’s second edition, which will run from February 9 to April 21, has now revealed its artist list.
In a statement, Wakefield said that Desert X’s 2019 show, which does not have a title, will embrace “a range of ecological, environmental and social issues that have been driving conversations about our role in the anthropocene.”
Among the projects set to debut at this year’s exhibition are Pia Camil’s Lover’s Rainbow, which places two rainbows crafted from rebar on either side of the U.S.-Mexico border (one will appear in Baja, Mexico, the other in the Coachella Valley). Postcommodity will stage It Exists in Many Forms, a video and sound installation set in a midcentury home that explores the ideological implications of modernist artists’ interest in the desert, and Jenny Holzer will set up projections that will appear on the mountainside of the Whitewater Preserve and on streets in the Coachella Valley.
