The Prix Marcel Duchamp, an award given annually to an artist working in France, has revealed its shortlist for 2019, with a winner to be announced at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in October. Considered by many to be the most prestigious art prize in France, the Prix Marcel Duchamp comes with €35,000 (about $40,300). Past winners include Kader Attia, Cyprien Gaillard, Melik Ohanian, and Clément Cogitore, who last year became the first filmmaker to take home the award.
This year’s nominees are Eric Baudelaire, whose films involving landscape theory were featured in the 2017 Whitney Biennial; Katinka Bock, a maker of curious sculptures engaged with meteorological conditions; Marguerite Humeau, whose mystical sculptures evoking prehistoric times and other worlds were the subject of a just-closed New Museum exhibition in New York; and Ida Tursic & Wilfried Mille, a duo whose paintings reflect the frantic flow of images today.
