The Park Avenue Armory has received a $1.93 million from the city of New York to support the replacement of the 138-year-old wooden flooring in the institution’s drill hall, which is regularly used by the Armory to host various events, including the annual ADAA Art Show, commissions by artists, and performances.
The grant will give the Park Avenue Armory nearly half of the total funds needed to complete the floor-replacement project, which is estimated to cost around $4 million. Some $1 million of the funding will come from the mayor’s office, $875,000 will come from the city council, and $50,000 will come from the borough president’s office. (Additional funds for the project—ones not related to the grant—have come from New York state, the Howard Gilman Foundation, and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.)
In a statement, Tom Finkelpearl, the NYC Cultural Affairs commissioner, said, “Park Avenue Armory’s creative programming has become a cornerstone of New York’s cutting edge performing arts community… The City is excited to make this investment in the drill hall’s expansive floor, which literally provides a platform for daring artists and eager audiences to connect with one another.”
