PEGGY TENISON/SAN ANTONIO MUSEUM OF ART, GIFT OF ERNEST POMERANTZ AND MARIE BRENNER, 2012.23.1

Collectors Marie Brenner and Ernest Pomerantz have given 850 photographs to the San Antonio Museum of Art in Texas, with 70 of the works set to appear in February in an exhibition titled “Capturing the Moment: Photographs from the Marie Brenner and Ernest Pomerantz Collection.”

All of the works date from the 20th century; many of them are documentary photographs, photojournalistic work, and street photographs. Included are pieces by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Danny Lyon, Joel Meyerowitz, Stephen Shore, Ilse Bing, and Dmitri Baltermants, among others.

“We are so grateful to Marie Brenner and Ernest Pomerantz for their generosity, and for sharing our appreciation for photography as a medium that can speak to all audiences,” Katie Luber, the museum’s director, said in a statement. “This gift is an important one for our institution, building both the depth and breadth of our photography collection. These works reflect a crucial period of the 20th century, with more than seven decades of images of both tumultuousness and calm.”
