Koji Inoue, who currently works as international director and specialist in Christie’s postwar and contemporary art department, will join Hauser & Wirth as international senior director of postwar and contemporary art in summer 2019. In the newly created role, Inoue will oversee the gallery’s space in New York’s Upper East Side, which will now be devoted exclusively to historical exhibitions. The focus at that gallery will now be artists whose estates represented by Hauser & Wirth as well as others that are not on the gallery’s slate.
According to a release, Inoue’s appointment “is part of Hauser & Wirth’s mission to give increased attention to historical and secondary market works of art, and to further expand this area of its business.”
Iwan Wirth, president and cofounder of Hauser & Wirth, said in a statement, “We have always successfully combined activities across the primary and secondary markets, the historical and the new. A core principle of our approach is that a strong 20th century program contextualizes the art of today, and the art of the present re-contextualizes the art of the past. It’s a full circle, and we look forward to tracing it in many interesting ways with a dedicated space for historical exhibitions at our 69th Street gallery.”
Inoue began working at Christie’s in 2008. He has held various positions there, including global head of private sales for postwar and contemporary art, head of client intelligence and strategic development, and head of the New York evening sale. His move to Hauser & Wirth follows that of Liberté Nuti, who left her role as international director of Impressionist and modern art at Christie’s and joined the gallery earlier this year.
Wirth said that the hiring of Inoue and Nuti marks “a new phase of our business. Over the course of more than a quarter century, our gallery has supported research into and developed connoisseurship in the field of 20th century masterworks. And now our attention to this area is growing in truly exciting ways. Koji and Liberté bring firepower to our already significant, ongoing project to find and place exceptional works with the foremost collections worldwide.”
Inoue said in the release, “I am thrilled to join such a well-respected organization and become part of Hauser & Wirth’s world-class team.
