The Capitol Hill Jazz Foundation has teamed up with Mayor Muriel Bowser for the second annual Hillfest Music Exposition, Hillfest Conference Panel and Hillfest 2018 all day-event from Oct. 3-6. Created to transform music advocacy into policy, the organization gives D.C. based artists the opportunity to perform and promote their weekly Jam Session, seek instrument and housing assistance and share their voices with local and federal agencies.
The weekly Jam Session series is housed at Mr. Henry’s Restaurant, 601 Pennsylvania Avenue S.E., Washington, D.C., every Wednesday, 8 – 11 p.m. These have provided performers opportunities to win up to $100 and network with other local talent. However, during Hillfest week, each event will be followed by additional Jam Sessions including 7 – 11 p.m., Oct. 4, at The Corner Store Arts 900 South Carolina Ave S.E., Washington, D.C. and 8 – 11 p.m., Oct. 5, at Henry’s Restaurant in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.
Conference registration will begin Oct. 3 at Mr. Henry’s Restaurant and Oct. 4 at the John A. Wilson Building. Sessions will tackle pressing issues such as expansion of economic development in the jazz community and increasing women’s participation in the jazz industry.
Local vendors will showcase instruments, provide music and educational instruction in jazz performance and offer local recording studio sessions for live bands and recording classes as part of the Hillfest Exposition, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 5, at Eastern Market (North Hall), 225 7th Street S.E. Artists are strongly encouraged to attend the exposition, as there will also be opportunities for sponsorship.
The exposition will be followed by a daylong concert, 10 a.m., Oct. 6, at Garfield Park located on 2nd and F Streets S.E. The Capitol Hill Jazz Foundation will present a variety of talent from the jazz industry, such as Stefon Harris & Blackout, Cheryl Pepsi Riley, JOGO Project and even Friendship Technical Prep High School Band. People can come out to relax, enjoy music and learn a dance step or two with one of the many local dance performance agencies participating. Hosts throughout the day include radio personality Britt Waters and AFRO Washington, D.C. Editor Micha Green.
These events are family friendly for individuals of all ages.
