Louis Marchesano has been tapped as the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s new senior curator of prints, drawings, and photographs, taking over the role from Innis Shoemaker, who retired earlier this year. Marchesano served in a similar role at the Getty Research Institute, where he was curator of prints and drawings since 2002.
In a release, he stated a desire to expand the museum’s collection and added, “I’m especially excited about working with colleagues across the museum and thinking creatively about new exhibitions and research projects. This is a great moment to be joining the PMA given its ambitious campaign to transform and renew the institution.”
Marchesano will begin his work with the museum this coming January. Timothy Rub, the museum’s director and CEO, said, “Louis will bring a wealth of experience to his new position and has proven himself to be an exceptional leader, a capable administrator, and a valued colleague. . . . It was not only the breadth of his experience but also the breadth of his interests across the field that made Louis such a compelling candidate for this position.”
