In its first foray into lifestyle programming, SEC Network will welcome Southern food and culture series TrueSouth to its lineup this fall. Executive produced by ESPN The Magazine’s Wright Thompson and featuring writer and host John T. Edge, the show follows Edge as he travels around the region, introducing viewers to Southern tastemakers, food, culture and history as they intertwine in the beautiful yet complex South.
TrueSouth premieres Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. ET. The show is presented with limited commercial interruption by YellaWood, the first sponsor presentation of its kind for SEC Network.
“TrueSouth is a food and culture show that sidesteps stereotypes and tells honest stories about the region’s past and future,” said Edge, a three-time James Beard Award winner. “You will want to eat in all these places. We will share what it means to be eating fried chicken and collards at a meat-and-three in Nashville, keftedes and chickpeas at a Greek restaurant in Birmingham, racks of ribs at a family-owned barbecue joint in Athens, and wok-crusted T-bones at a Chinese restaurant in Shreveport.”
TrueSouth explores contemporary Southern identity, focusing on cafes, diners and other workaday restaurants where community incubates and unrelated people relate as equals.
“We could not be more thrilled to welcome TrueSouth, Wright and John T. to our SEC Network family,” said Chris Turner, SEC Network senior director of programming. “As SEC Network enters its fifth year of existence, we are always striving to be different and try new things. For us, TrueSouth gives SEC Network the opportunity to explore the food and culture that impacts our viewers every day.”
The series will take viewers to Birmingham, Ala., Athens, Ga., Nashville, Tenn. and Shreveport, La. Each episode revolves around two bedrock spots that locals cherish. From those bases, the show explores cities and their environs, getting to know good people through good food.
