In 2016, the former San Francisco 49er began kneeling during the national anthem to protest social injustices such as police brutality and racial inequality and alleged that NFL team owners worked together to keep him out of the league once he hit free agency in 2017.
The NFL announced new rules prohibiting players from kneeling during the anthem when they’re on the field in May, but it was put on hold while the league and the Players Association worked on a resolution.
Kaepernick believes says that if owners conspired against him that it would be a violation of the union’s rules.
