UPDATE 3- 8/24/18:

Former President Bill Clinton, Former Attorney General Eric Holder, Smokey Robinson, Clive Davis and the Rev. Jesse Jackson are scheduled to speak at Franklin’s funeral on Aug. 31, her family confirmed with the Detroit Free Press on Friday. 

Gladys Knight, Angie Stone and more will perform at an Aretha Franklin Tribute concert at Chene Park Amphitheater in Detroit on Aug. 30 a day after her public memorial, per The Detroit News. 

“On behalf of the family, thank you to those paying tribute and celebrating the life of Aretha. We are grateful for the tremendous outpouring of love and support we have received from friends, supporters and fans all around the world,” Franklin’s niece, Sabrina V. Garrett Owens, said in a statement to The Detroit News.

UPDATE 2- 8/23/18:

Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia, Shirley Caesar and more have been tapped to perform at Franklin’s memorial, Franklin’s publicist confirmed to The Associated Press.

The Aretha Franklin Choir and the Aretha Franklin Celebration Choir will also perform at the service for the “Queen of Soul” who died Aug. 16.

UPDATE- 8/20/18: 

Aretha Franklin’s representative confirmed with Variety that a public viewing for the “Queen of Soul” will be held at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History in Detroit on Aug. 28 and Aug. 29 in Detroit from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

A private funeral for family and friends will be held on Aug. 31 at Greater Grace Temple, per the report.

Aretha Franklin’s family will hold a public memorial for the “Queen of Soul” at Detroit’s Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, where her body will lie in state for two days, sources tell TMZ.


Franklin died at her home surrounded by family and friends on Thursday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 76.

Sources told TMZ that her family expects thousands to show their respects to Franklin and that a church would be too small.

TMZ reports that the family decided on an open casket for the viewing and that a funeral for family and friends will be held at Greater Grace Temple.

Tributes poured in from all over the world for the legendary singer.
