Axel’s Food & Ice Cream hosted a celebration for Max Mendez, who finished his radiation treatments this week.

An 8-year-old boy who has been battling leukemia for the past two years wanted to go out for ice cream to celebrate his final radiation treatment. But once his Merrimack, N.H., town got wind of it, the entire community came out to celebrate “Mighty Max” Mendez.
“Please join us this evening at 7 pm as we celebrate Mighty Max & his last radiation treatment,” Axel’s Food and Ice Cream posted on Facebook, on July 24. “We will be selling raffle tickets with all proceeds going to the Jimmy Fund in Max’s name! Merrimack let’s show some love to Max & his family!”
As word spread, firefighters and police officers showed up to help celebrate and give Max an added boost.

“We understand that Max likes firetrucks, police cruises, all that fun stuff, so it was our opportunity to come out and greet him and hopefully cheer up his day,” Merrimack Fire Capt. Brian Dubreuil told WMUR9.
Max’s mother, Amy, also invited supporters to bring toys to be donated to Boston Children’s Hospital. Max made headlines previously for a winter toy drive he organized to benefit the children at the Jimmy Fund Clinic, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children’s Hospital.
While he still has months of chemotherapy left to complete, his family said it’s helpful to be done with radiation.
“It’s nice to check off a milestone and be able to really focus on stuff that he’s achieving, and we can put behind us and not have to worry about it anymore,” Mendez told the news outlet.
