The Film London Jarman Award has announced the shortlisted artists for 2018. Five solo artists and one duo are in contention for this year’s award, which comes with £10,000 (about $13,200) and recognizes United Kingdom–based artists making moving-image work.
Among the nominated artists this year are Hardeep Pandhal, who debuted at this year’s New Museum Triennial an animated work that skewered racist notions about British Sikhs, and Lawrence Lek, whose videos have explored what he calls “Sinofuturism,” a line of thinking that understands contemporary Asia as being increasingly shaped by Orientalism, globalism, and digital technology. The other nominees are Jasmina Cibic, Daria Martin, Margaret Salmon, and the duo Larry Achiampong & David Blandy.
In a statement, Adrian Wootton, the chief executive of Film London and the British Film Commission, said, “This year’s shortlist showcases an incredible diversity of practice while interrogating burning issues in imaginative, innovative ways.” The nominees’ work examines a world “in a constant state of flux,” he continued, “and shows just how the U.K.’s artist filmmakers have a finger on the ever-quickening pulse of both modern life and modern moving image.”
