A new partnership between Shandaken Projects and the Trust for Governors Island will select five New York City-based artists for a one-year residency with free studio space on Governors Island. Applications open today and will close on July 30.
As part of the program, named Shandaken: Governors Island, the chosen artists will spend their residency undertaking an immersive, creative study that will culminate in works that “respond to the island’s unique history, ecology and place with New York Harbor,” according to a news release.
The resident artists’ completed works will be exhibited on the island, viewable free of charge, and may take any number of forms, from performances to non-traditional lectures and talks.
According to a statement by Nicholas Weist, the director of Shandaken Projects, “The cost of space is the most pressing issue facing New Yorkers today, so we are thrilled to work in partnership with the Trust to make free space available to artists.”
Shandaken Projects supports arts, culture and education initiatives with programs like Shandaken: Storm King (a collaboration with the Storm King Art Center, the art center in upstate New York), a free artist residency program based in Cornwall, New York, and Paint School, a free painting master class previously hosted in New York locations like NYU, Cooper Union, Triple Canopy, and Abrons Art Center.
Meredith Johnson, the vice president of arts and culture at the Trust for Governors Island, said in a statement, “Governors Island has a strong history of supporting artistic production, and we are thrilled to grow this commitment by partnering with Shandaken on artist-driven public projects related to the Island’s rich history, ecology, and geography, allowing New Yorkers the opportunity to experience the Island in new and dynamic ways.”
